Iga Swiatek’s reign at Wimbledon is over. The defending champion and No.3 seed was stunned 7-6(9), 6-2 by rising Filipina star Alexandra Eala in the third round on Saturday, in a fierce battle at the All England Club.

Swiatek ended years of doubt about her grass-court game with last year’s title. But the 25-year-old came into SW19 short on rhythm after an early exit in Bad Homburg, and is still searching for consistency.

Swiatek had fought her way past Taylor Townsend and cruised past Karolina Pliskova in the previous two rounds. But on Centre Court under the scorching afternoon sun, she ran into an inspired Alexandra Eala and came up short.

“I don't know how to describe it,” said an emotional Eala.

“I mean, I'm in the second week of a Grand Slam, and it's amazing for me. ‌Iga's a phenomenal player and nice person. So I'm grateful to be able to share Centre Court ‌with her.

“Maybe for someone like Iga, who has won so many Grand Slams, or maybe someone like Serena or Venus Williams, this achievement may seem small.

“But for someone who grew up in the Philippines... I went to training with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks and my light-up shoes and chubby cheeks, so... to her, this is everything.

“But because I'm emotional does not mean I'm satisfied, so yeah, okay, next round. Let's go.”

Eala shocked Swiatek in Miami last year, but the Pole hit back when they met on clay in Madrid. This time on grass, Swiatek was in trouble early after dropping a brutal first set where neither player gave an inch.

Swiatek managed a smile at the end of the set, but frustration quickly showed. She yelled toward her team in the stands and slammed her racket onto a chair, while crowd favorite Eala basked in loud cheers from an electric Centre Court.

“This is one of the biggest matches of my life, for sure,” Eala added, before addressing fans.

“This is my dream court, so I'm really happy with the atmosphere that you guys gave. Thank you so much for cheering me on.

“How many times have I dreamed of opportunities like this ... when I have my opportunities, I have to ‌take them because they're blessings. Being here is a blessing.

“I worked super hard to get here. If I have the chance, I'm taking it.”

The left-handed Eala came out firing from the baseline and unsettled Swiatek right away. She turned the screw in the second set too, racing to a double break and a 3-0 lead before Swiatek finally started to find some fight.

Swiatek did pull one break back, but Eala broke again to shut down the comeback. She sealed it with a crushing forehand winner, booking a fourth-round meeting with 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini.
