Danish History + Carolina Grit: Hurricanes Win 2026 Stanley Cup
| Hall, Blake power Carolina past Vegas as Canes win Cup in 6 |
The Hurricanes held Vegas scoreless and went 11-1 all-time with a 3-2 series lead. Blake set franchise records as Carolina captured the 2026 Stanley Cup over the Golden Knights.

20 years later, the Cup is back in Carolina. The Hurricanes shut out Vegas 3-0 in Game 6 on Sunday to clinch their first Stanley Cup since 2006.
Rod Brind’Amour made history behind the bench. He’s the first NHL coach since Larry Robinson in 2000 to win the Stanley Cup with the same team he won it with as a player - Brind’Amour lifted it in 2006.
Carolina dominated this playoff run. They finished 16-3 with two sweeps in the opening rounds. Only the 1987-88 Edmonton Oilers did better, going 16-2 for the best postseason record ever.

Jordan Staal made history at 37. He’s now the oldest player ever to win the Conn Smythe Trophy after potting 6 goals in 6 Final games. Staal got the Cup first, then handed it off to goaltender Frederik Andersen.

Brandon Bussi was lights out in net. The rookie made 22 saves for a shutout and joined rare company - only Matt Murray 2017, Patrick Roy 1986, and Frank McCool 1945 did it before him in a Stanley Cup Final.
History repeated itself for Carolina. Cam Ward took over for Martin Gerber in 2006 and backstopped the Canes to a Cup as a rookie. 20 years later, Bussi did the same thing.

Frederik Andersen started most of Carolina’s playoff games, and now he’s made Danish hockey history. He and Nikolaj Ehlers are only the 2nd and 3rd Danes ever to win the Stanley Cup. Lars Eller was the first, doing it with Washington in 2018.
Ehlers wrote the ending himself. He scored the goal that sealed it and put the final nail in Vegas’ coffin.

Game Recap
The opening frame was all action. 18 shots on goal and 3 power plays couldn’t separate the teams until Carolina struck. Taylor Hall buried his 7th goal of the playoffs, with Jaccob Slavin and Jackson Blake picking up assists, to make it 1-0 Canes.
Hall’s 11th road point and Blake’s 9th go-ahead assist set new Hurricanes single-postseason records. Slavin also made history - his 12th assist in a series-clinching game passed teammate Seth Jarvis for the most ever in franchise history.
A little past midway through the first, Jackson Blake took the game’s first penalty and gave Vegas a big power play chance.
That chance vanished fast. Tomas Hertl took a delay-of-game penalty just 31 seconds in, making it 4-on-4. Carolina got a short power play right after, but neither team could score.
Bussi stood tall early. He was outstanding in the first half, stopping chance after chance to keep Vegas off the board.
Heart rate check after that first period ending, @Canes fans?! 📈 #StanleyCup

With under 4 minutes left in the first, Carolina got their second power play and a shot at making it 2-0. Carter Hart stood on his head though and the Canes couldn’t cash in.
Vegas couldn’t score in the first, but they started the second with the man advantage. 38 seconds carried over from the first period, giving them a second power play look. Still no luck for the Golden Knights.
Carolina took over in the second period. They dominated every part of the game from start to finish.
Jackson Blake stayed hot after setting up Hall’s opener. He scored his 7th goal of the playoffs to make it 2-0, with Logan Stankoven grabbing the assist.
Blake kept adding to the record book. He now has the most multi-point games in Hurricanes/Whalers postseason history with 7. At 22, he’s also the youngest player ever to post 2+ points in a potential Cup-clinching game.
Vegas came out firing in the first, outshooting Carolina 11-8. That flipped in the second. The Golden Knights only managed 3 shots total, and none at all for the last 15:43 of the period.
Carolina got their third power play of the night and a chance to go up 3-0. Their power play has been a problem all postseason though, and they couldn’t convert again.
The Canes also shut down Vegas’ third power play. Jack Eichel rang one off the crossbar on what would’ve been the perfect chance to make it 2-1, but Carolina killed it off.

When the horn sounded, Vegas still hadn’t scored. Carolina never let up at either end and skated off with their second Stanley Cup in franchise history.
The win pushed Carolina’s record to 11-1 all-time when they hold a 3-2 series lead. They don’t waste those chances.
