FC Twente forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel has announced he will retire from professional football when the season ends.
Over a distinguished career, the 37-year-old has turned out for eight clubs and made more than 600 appearances, featuring for Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Sporting CP, Norwich City, Saint-Etienne, Real Betis, Basel and now Twente.
The Dutch striker has been consistently prolific, but his most productive period has come in the Eredivisie with Twente, where he’s scored 62 goals in 191 matches, including nine this season.
With his contract set to expire in June, Van Wolfswinkel shared an emotional farewell message via the club’s YouTube channel.
“After 18 years at the highest level, there comes a moment when you feel: it's enough, it's time. What started as a dream, grew into a life. A life filled with discipline, sacrifices and unforgettable highs, but also setbacks that made me stronger. I gave it everything I had,” the former Norwich man said.
“Every training session, every match, every moment, always with a smile. And I am grateful to my teammates, my coaches, my family, my wife, and our kids and everyone who supported me along the way.
“This sport has shaped me into the person I am today, not as a player, but as a human being. Now it is time for a new chapter, a new challenge, off the pitch. I'm not saying goodbye to the sport, only to my career as a professional athlete. Thank you for everything.”
Van Wolfswinkel has said he plans to remain in football after retiring, leaving fans curious about what role he’ll take on next.
