A third-quarter scuffle between Mitchell and Stephon Castle added to the tension as OKC pulled away late in San Antonio.
Game 4 is set for Sunday in San Antonio, with the Thunder looking to move one win away from the NBA Finals...
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 26 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder came back from a slow start to beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-108 on Friday. The win gives Oklahoma City a 2-1 lead in the NBA Western Conference Finals.
The reigning champions got another strong team performance, with Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way. Four players off the bench also scored in double figures to help secure the road victory.
Jared McCain led Oklahoma City’s bench with 24 points, and Jaylin Williams hit five three-pointers on his way to 18 points.
For San Antonio, Victor Wembanyama finished with 26 points to lead all Spurs scorers, and Devin Vassell added 20.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised his team’s “poise” after they recovered from an early 15-point deficit to win by the same margin.
“It was a punch - credit to them,” Daigneault said of San Antonio’s fast start. “They were ready to play and they got us early. But I thought we showed great poise to understand the 48-minute nature of the game.”
Tension had been building through the first two games of the series, and it boiled over early in the third quarter. Mitchell shoved Stephon Castle as the Spurs guard went up for a basket.
Castle slid off the court after the contact. Teammate Devin Vassell then got into a shoving match with Mitchell, and the incident quickly turned into a scrum.

Oklahoma City had already built a 10-point lead at 67-57 by that point, and they kept applying pressure to go up 95-84 heading into the fourth quarter.
Scoring continued in the fourth quarter, and the Thunder held onto their advantage to close out the win.
“We were really sharp to start the game and obviously we didn’t sustain it,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said afterward.
“It wasn't sustainable how we started but I thought we played very fast and that's something that tapered off as the game went along. We have to find a way to do that.”
Game 4 of the best-of-seven series will be played in San Antonio on Sunday.
