World No. 3 Anders Antonsen gave Denmark an ideal start in their Thomas Cup quarter-final against Thailand on Friday night, beating World No. 2 Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-16, 11-21, 21-18 in a three-set battle.
Antonsen, Denmark’s top men’s singles player, opened the tie for the host nation with a win over Thailand in Horsens, where the team World Championships are being held.
In a high-level, physically demanding contest, World No. 3 Anders Antonsen defeated World No. 2 Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-16, 11-21, 21-18.
Both players looked drained in the third set, yet Antonsen pushed through to earn four match points as the atmosphere in Horsens hit fever pitch.
Fatigue cost Antonsen the first two match points, but on the third he sealed Denmark’s opening win against Thailand with a sharp forehand winner, sending the arena into a roar from the home crowd.
Antonsen started strongly and maintained a high level through the first set. Vitidsarn was under pressure early but flipped the momentum to take the second.
Antonsen grew frustrated as the tactics that worked in the first set stopped having an effect.
He adjusted his approach in the deciding third set, playing far more aggressively. Antonsen led for most of the set and ultimately gave Denmark the ideal start.
The Thomas Cup is contested as a best-of-five tie. Against Thailand, two singles and two doubles matches are still to come.
