Viborg FF’s hopes of claiming bronze in the Danish Superliga took a hit Friday night after they lost 1-0 at home to Sonderjyske - their first-ever home defeat to the visitors.

The win puts Sonderjyske back in contention for a medal spot following a 1-0 victory on the road at Viborg.

Not long ago, Sonderjyske looked out of the race after a crushing 6-0 loss to Brøndby. But Friday’s result means they’re still in the mix for third place.

FC Nordsjaelland sit third in the table, two points clear of both Viborg and Sonderjyske. They also have a game in hand and face FC Midtjylland on Sunday.

Viborg began Friday’s game well and created a good opportunity in the 17th minute when Thomas Jorgensen played a clever through ball to Asker Beck.

Beck, who netted twice in the 3-3 draw with FC Midtjylland last time out, couldn’t find his footing this time and fired wide of the target.

Sonderjyske took control late in the first half and began creating chances of their own. Just before the 35th minute, winger Olti Hyseni had a clear opening but shot straight at Viborg goalkeeper Lucas Lund.

The crossbar then came to Viborg’s rescue on a strike from midfielder Sefer Emini. Forward Matthew Hoppe also forced Lund into action before halftime, yet neither side could find the net and the score stayed level.

Sonderjyske capitalized on their momentum just four minutes after the restart, taking the lead when Hyseni pulled the ball across the box for Emini, who finished with a strike into the top of the net.

Viborg then dominated possession for the rest of the match, but the visitors defended resolutely to protect their advantage. In stoppage time, Dorian Junior had a chance to equalize for Viborg, yet he headed wide as Sonderjyske held on for the victory.
