Serie A: Como Beat Parma to Keep Champions League Push Alive

Como controlled the game against Parma and hit the woodwork twice before getting a 1-0 win at the Stadio Sinigaglia. Alberto Moreno scored the only goal, his third of the season.

Cesc Fabregas had to make do without Nico Paz, so Maxence Caqueret, Assane Diao, and Martin Maturina lined up behind lone striker Anastasios Douvikas.

Como had most of the ball and created the better chances. Parma sat deeper for much of the match and tried to hit them on the counter.

Como earned a string of corners before half-time and came close late in the first half when Greece striker Douvikas, their top scorer this season, struck the woodwork.

The Azzurri kept pushing after the break. Diao won possession high up the pitch, but his shot from inside the box lacked power and Suzuki saved it. He then stopped Douvikas from scoring on the rebound.

Como hit the post again when Martin Baturina’s free-kick came back off the frame. The ball stayed alive, and Alberto Moreno curled home a finish at the far post to finish the move.

Parma thought they had equalized when Mateo Pellegrino finished off a free-kick routine, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Como brought on Alvaro Morata, and the Spaniard had a chance to open his Serie A account for the season. He found himself alone in front of Suzuki but couldn’t convert.

The win lifts Como to 5th. They’re still two points off a Champions League place, but sit ahead of Juventus thanks to a better head-to-head record.
