Montreal got a break and avoided falling behind 2-0 when Jack Quinn appeared to double Buffalo’s lead. The goal was overturned on a coach’s challenge for goaltender interference.
The Canadiens capitalized on the reprieve and pulled level. Jake Evans’ first shot missed wide, but he kept working and set up Alex Newhook, who made no mistake to beat Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

That marked Newhook’s fifth goal across his last three outings.
The first period featured multiple power plays, and Montreal made theirs count just before the buzzer. Cole Caufield picked up the puck on the wing and drove toward goal. Though Luukkonen had the near post covered, Caufield cut inside and fired it home to the far side.
Despite outshooting Montreal in the opening 20 minutes, Buffalo went into the break trailing.
The Sabres drew even on a power play of their own after Alexandre Carrier was called for high-sticking. On the man advantage, Tage Thompson scored one of the oddest goals of the postseason when his clearing attempt bounced off the end boards and in off Jakub Dobes in the Montreal net.

That stood as the only goal of the second period, a frame largely controlled by the Canadiens.
The game-winner arrived with 13 minutes to play, and again it came on the power play. Zach Benson took the puck in front of net and finished with a backhand to put Buffalo ahead for good.

Montreal spent much of the remaining regulation time pushing for an equalizer. They pulled the goalie for a sixth attacker late on, but couldn’t find the breakthrough.
The series now shifts back to Buffalo for Game 5, effectively turning it into a best-of-three.
