Michael Woud lost his Auckland FC starting spot mid-season but returned after Oliver Sail’s injury. The 6-cap keeper saved a penalty in playoffs and kept a clean sheet in the Grand Final to help Auckland win the A-League.
New Zealand, ranked lowest of 48 teams, take Michael Woud to the World Cup. The Auckland FC keeper overcame a mid-season drop to become a key part of their first A-League championship win.
Auckland FC goalkeeper Michael Woud has postponed his wedding after making New Zealand’s World Cup squad. He says missing his big day is worth it to play in soccer’s biggest tournament.
Woud proposed to fiancée Zana Renton a year ago when a World Cup call-up seemed unlikely. They had planned to marry around the June 11 to July 19 finals in North America.
Coach Darren Bazeley named six-cap Woud as New Zealand’s third goalkeeper behind Max Crocombe and Alex Paulsen. Woud may not play a minute, but Renton has given her blessing for him to go.
“My fiancee was really supportive about it. It's not a bad thing to cancel your wedding for – it only happens every four years,” the 27-year-old keeper told New Zealand media.
“We'll just do it next year.”
Woud earned his World Cup spot after losing his place at Auckland FC mid-season. A dip in form saw him dropped as the club’s starting goalkeeper.
His return came quickly. Oliver Sail, the keeper who replaced him, injured his knee in January. That ruled Sail out for the rest of the A-League season and ended his World Cup hopes.
A goalkeeper compilation doesn't come much better than this 🤤

Woud made the most of his second chance. He played a key role as Auckland won their first A-League title. He saved a penalty in the shootout win over Melbourne City, then kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 Grand Final victory over Sydney FC last weekend. That win made Auckland the first New Zealand club to win the Australian top flight.
New Zealand are ranked lowest of all 48 teams at the World Cup. In the group stage they face Iran, Egypt, and Belgium.

Lose a tooth. Win a penalty. Just an average night at the office for @fc_auckland’s Michael Woud 😅 pic.twitter.com/lH2ZDblnFE
“I think my role is quite clear,” he said.
“Being the number three goalkeeper and being a support for the other goalkeepers and if I was called upon, to do my best.”
Woud’s at peace with his World Cup role as third-choice keeper. He’ll likely spend the tournament watching from the bench like a bridesmaid.
