The Netherlands will play Uzbekistan in their final World Cup warm-up match in New York, the KNVB confirmed on Thursday.
The opponent for the Dutch side’s last pre-tournament game in June hadn’t been announced until now, with a friendly against Algeria set for June 3 as the send-off fixture.
On Thursday, the KNVB said World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, coached by Fabio Cannavaro, will be the final opponent before the summer tournament. The two sides, both drawn in Group K alongside Portugal, Colombia, and DR Congo, will meet at Icahn Stadium in New York City on Monday, June 8.
The match will be played behind closed doors because of the venue’s limited capacity. Icahn Stadium is a 5,000-seat athletics stadium in Manhattan.
The Netherlands have already faced Norway and Ecuador in March, winning 2-1 and drawing 1-1. By the time the World Cup starts, they will have played teams from Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. Manager Ronald Koeman had said he wanted to test his squad against opponents from different confederations.
