Hirving Lozano has been left out as World Cup hosts Mexico named a 55-man preliminary squad for the tournament.

The squad was announced following a hectic week of backlash over the selection of Liga MX players, who missed out on playing in the Liguilla and the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals. Mexico will trim the group down to 26 players for the final World Cup roster.

Lozano Left Out After Eight Years

Hirving Lozano became a national hero in 2018 when his goal gave Mexico a famous win over Germany in their World Cup opener in Russia. Now 30 and playing for San Diego FC in MLS, “Chucky” has been overlooked for a third World Cup. Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre said Lozano would only be considered if he was getting regular minutes, and he didn’t make the cut.

Rodrigo Huescas is another absentee after a difficult season. The former Cruz Azul right-back pushed for a move to FC Copenhagen to focus on his development. He started well and showed flashes of quality, but a knee injury halted his progress and he never got back to full form.

Diego Campillo also misses out despite being one of Guadalajara’s standout performers this season. The Chivas center-back has been a key part of the team’s strong run, but Javier Aguirre and his staff decided he isn’t ready for a World Cup call-up yet. Guadalajara lead all clubs with eight players included in the preliminary squad.
