Man United Set to Offer Carrick Permanent Manager Role

Michael Carrick expects Man United Future to be decided 'pretty soon'

United are negotiating a two-year contract with a third-year option for Carrick. The former midfielder has taken the team to third in the Premier League.

From steering United back into the Champions League to earning praise for steadying the squad, Carrick is now in line for the permanent role...

Michael Carrick said Friday he expects to find out soon whether he’ll stay on as Manchester United manager permanently. The interim boss was responding to reports that he’s in line to get the job full-time.

Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has been credited with guiding United back into the Champions League places.

United had been linked with several managers, but CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are reportedly set to recommend Carrick to co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

The former United and England midfielder has outperformed expectations, taking the team to third in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest.

Talks are reportedly underway on a two-year deal for Carrick with an option for a third year, and an agreement could be reached before the week is out.

Asked about his future, Carrick told reporters: “Can't blame you for asking, two games to go, there's not much else I can say.

“Listen, the future for me is going to be decided pretty soon. We knew that was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season, so nothing has changed.

"There's no big swing on that, that is what it is, and obviously whatever is beyond that is pretty close round the corner anyway.”

Carrick left Middlesbrough in 2025 after missing out on promotion to the Premier League with the Championship side.

Things have gone much smoother at United. He’s been a steadying influence in the dressing room following Amorim’s turbulent spell in charge.

During his 12 years as a United midfielder, Carrick also won the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.

“It's a unique football club, a special football club. I'm immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, to help,” he said.

“As a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter and caring about the club so much, to come back and help and move the club forward was important.

“To make a big step and get back in the Champions League is good. We're happy with the work we've done so far.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Several high-profile managers, from Jose Mourinho to Louis van Gaal, have tried and failed to bring the title back to Old Trafford.

“You've always got to aim upwards. That's the beauty of football and competition, to achieve something and back it up, improve on things, that's always the challenge,” Carrick said of United's gradual improvement this season.

“For the players, for the squad, for the whole group, for the club, we want to keep moving in a positive way and in the right direction.

“The closer you get to the top, the less room for progress, but progress is what needs to be aimed for.”
