LaLiga: Girona Edge Clear of Drop Zone After 1-1 Draw with Sociedad
Cristhian Stuani’s 66th-minute finish secured Girona a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad, lifting them out of LaLiga’s relegation zone.
Michel’s side now sit three points behind Valencia in 11th after a second consecutive draw at Montilivi...
Girona recovered from a goal down to take a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad, climbing out of LaLiga’s bottom three in the process. It also means they’ve gone unbeaten in their last two meetings with La Real.
Starting the day 19th in a congested relegation battle with few games left, Girona came out pressing from the first whistle.
The home crowd erupted when Joel Roca let fly early, though his effort was straight at the keeper. Minutes later they were on their feet again as Viktor Tsygankov’s strike was tipped onto the post in the fourth minute.
Tsygankov went even closer from a free-kick, but Girona were nearly caught out when Alex Remiro launched a quick ball forward. Ander Barrenetxea got on the end of it and flicked a shot that Paulo Gazzaniga rushed out to stop.
The Blanquivermells kept pushing for the first goal, and Azzedine Ounahi slipped a neat pass through to Arnau Martinez in the box. The captain’s finish was poor though, and he ended up sending it out for a throw-in.
La Real weathered the pressure and struck in the 28th minute. A sloppy corner from Gazzaniga gave them the chance, and Jon Martin rose highest to head home Sergio Gómez’s delivery, beating three Girona defenders in the air.
The visitors lost Barrenetxea to injury soon after, but they held onto their lead. Tsygankov headed wide for Girona, and Remiro pulled off a good save to tip Ounahi’s strike over the bar.
Girona came out on the front foot after the break and Tsygankov had a shot blocked within two minutes of the restart.
Roca then curled one just wide of the far post and had a header deflected onto the side netting. At the other end, Mikel Oyarzabal stopped a Girona break by hauling down Ounahi and picked up a yellow card for it.
Girona kept pushing and got their reward in the 66th minute. Half-time sub Cristhian Stuani met Arnau Martinez’s low cross with a clean first-time finish, sparking wild celebrations at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.

Míchel turned to Claudio Echeverri late on, and the change nearly paid off instantly. The Argentine’s shot flashed just wide, and Girona were left settling for a second straight draw.
The point moves them three places and a point clear of the relegation zone, and they’re now three points behind 11th-placed Valencia. For Real Sociedad, it extends their winless run in LaLiga to six matches.
