Hull Beat Middlesbrough in Stoppage-Time Thriller to Reach Premier League
Despite finishing below Middlesbrough in the table, Hull City won when it mattered most, scoring in stoppage time to clinch promotion at Wembley Stadium.
McBurnie’s last-gasp goal sends Hull City back to the Premier League...
Hull City are heading back to the Premier League for the first time in nine years. They beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, with a stoppage-time goal sealing the win.
Given what was on the line and the off-field drama leading up to kickoff, it made sense that both teams started cautiously. The opening minutes were tense, with neither side willing to take unnecessary risks.
Both teams struggled to create clear chances in the opening stages. Aidan Morris summed it up in the 15th minute when his 20-yard shot drifted well wide of the target.
The game opened up slightly after that. David Strelec headed over from close range, and Lewie Coyle forced Sol Brynn into his first save of the afternoon with a header in the 24th minute.
Neither side came close to scoring until right before halftime. Hull had the best chance when Oli McBurnie’s header from inside the box hit the crossbar.

Just after that, Middlesbrough responded. Strelec found himself in a good position but dragged his shot wide. The first half was slow to ignite, but those late moments hinted at a more open second half.
The weight of the occasion was clear in the second half. Every minute that passed without a goal added to the tension, with both defenses standing firm and making it hard for either team to create a breakthrough.
Clear chances had all but disappeared, and you could feel the nerves spreading through the stadium. Neither side looked likely to break the deadlock.
With under 10 minutes left in normal time, Joe Gelhardt got into a good spot in the box for Middlesbrough. He turned and shot, but sent it wide, much to the relief of the Boro fans behind the goal.
Just when extra time seemed certain, Oli McBurnie produced a classic play-off moment. He was in the right place at the right time in the 95th minute and tapped the ball home to give Hull a dramatic late lead.
Hull held firm through the remaining minutes of stoppage time to see out the win. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among their supporters.
