Ghana vs Uganda: U-17 World Cup Playoff After AFCON Exit
| Ghana Eye U-17 World Cup spot after cruel AFCON exit on draw of lots |
Ghana were knocked out of the U-17 AFCON on a coin toss but will now meet Uganda for a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Despite beating South Africa 3-1, Ghana missed the AFCON quarter-finals and now face Uganda in a winner-takes-all playoff for World Cup qualification...
Ghana’s U-17 side were knocked out of the 2026 U-17 AFCON by a tiebreaker draw, even after beating South Africa. They finished third in Group D level on points with Algeria, but still have a shot at the U-17 World Cup through a playoff with Uganda.
The Black Starlets exited the tournament in cruel fashion, losing out to Algeria on the draw of lots after their final group standings were identical.
Ghana beat South Africa 3-1 in their final group match, but still missed out on the quarter-finals. After every tiebreaker with Algeria ended level, the decision came down to a coin toss, which went against Ghana.
Algeria had lost 2-1 to Senegal in the other group game. That result left Ghana and Algeria finishing with the same points, goal difference, goals scored, and an identical 2-2 head-to-head result from their opening match.
Jacob Nartey, Ghana’s assistant coach, represented the team at the draw. The outcome sent Algeria through to the next round and ended Ghana’s run.
It was a harsh and brutal way to leave a tournament that had held so much promise for the Black Starlets. They returned to the U-17 AFCON in Morocco for the first time in nine years.
Ghana delivered exactly what was needed in their final group game against South Africa. The Black Starlets put together their best performance of the tournament and won 3-1.
Joseph Narbi scored twice in the first half to give Ghana control at the break. Thandanani Mhlongo then pulled one back for South Africa against the run of play, giving them some momentum.
Ghana took advantage after South Africa were reduced to 10 men. Second-half substitute Augustine Appiah made it 3-1, a goal that brought Ghana level with Algeria on goal difference.
Despite that win, Ghana are out of the competition. They will look back on missed chances against South Africa, where they managed 36 shots with 12 on target.
Return Marred by Fine Margins
This tournament marked Ghana’s return to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2017.
The Black Starlets have a strong record in the competition, winning it in 1995 and 1999 and finishing as runners-up in 2005 and 2017. Missing out on several recent editions has underlined the inconsistency that has affected Ghanaian youth football development.
Ghana began with a 2-2 draw against Algeria after leading by two goals. In their second game against Senegal, an early Ghana goal was ruled out by VAR in the eighth minute before Senegal were reduced to 10 men.
Ghana later missed a penalty and were beaten 1-0 by Ibrahima Dione’s counter-attacking goal in the 57th minute. It was a game they controlled for long spells without finding a goal.

World Cup Hopes Alive in Playoff Against Uganda
Ghana’s exit from the AFCON does not end their campaign. CAF’s expanded format gives third-placed teams a path to the FIFA U-17 World Cup through playoff matches, and Ghana will take that chance.
The Black Starlets now meet Uganda in a World Cup playoff. The fixture adds an extra layer of interest as Uganda are coached by Laryea Kingston, a former Ghana international who once managed this same Black Starlets age group and knows the players well.
Kingston understands Ghana’s strengths. The Black Starlets were hurt by the draw but remain determined. They must draw on everything they have in this single match to secure a place at the U-17 World Cup.
