Unai Emery says Harvey Elliott barely playing for Aston Villa this season is “embarrassing for everyone involved.”
The Liverpool loanee has managed only four Premier League appearances since joining Villa last summer.
His sole league start came against Fulham in September, but he was subbed off at halftime and hasn’t featured in the top flight since February.
Villa were set to buy Elliott for £35m if he hit 10 league appearances, but with that clause out of reach, the 23-year-old will head back to Anfield after the season. He did impress for England’s U21s in their 2025 European Championship win.
Speaking ahead of Friday's clash with Elliott's parent club Liverpool, Emery said: “It is something embarrassing for everyone involved in it. My apologies for Harvey Elliott are every day in my mind.
“But it is the responsibility. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility.
“As a human and as a person, how the season has gone has been difficult.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Elliott will get a chance to prove himself in pre-season before the club decides what’s next for him.
“It didn't work out as he wanted it, as we wanted it and probably also how Villa wanted it, because you usually sign a player or bring him in on loan to use him,“ said Slot.
“He's contracted to us so he will be with us in the start of the season.”
