The interim boss said the Blues have the foundations to succeed ahead of Saturday’s game at Liverpool. McFarlane also confirmed teenager Jesse Derry will miss the rest of the season with a head injury.

Chelsea’s interim manager Calum McFarlane says the club has the “foundations” for success, responding after Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher called them a “broken club” in light of their poor Premier League form.

Carragher’s comments came after Chelsea’s sixth consecutive league loss on Monday, this time against Nottingham Forest.

McFarlane, who stepped in after Liam Rosenior was dismissed last month, struck an optimistic tone about Chelsea’s outlook ahead of Saturday’s trip to Liverpool.

“It's Jamie's job, he's a pundit, he's got to give his opinion and I respect that, that's his job and it's what he's there to do. I can only speak on my experience at this club,” McFarlane said on Thursday.

“And I think that there's a lot of foundations for this team to have success. We're not in the best form at the moment, we're not performing the way we should be but I do think there are foundations there for this team to be successful.”

The English coach, who guided his side past Leeds last month to reach the FA Cup final against Manchester City, rejected suggestions that his players had stopped giving their all as the season nears its end.

The performances haven't been good enough, we're in a really bad run at the moment,” he said. “The Leeds performance was a glimmer when we thought we could build on that and we weren't able to do that.

“But I do see these boys every day, every training session, every meeting, in the gym. They are in a good place to go and attack games. We just haven't been able to translate that.”

McFarlane confirmed that teenager Jesse Derry will be out for the rest of the season after being stretchered off during the 3-1 loss to Forest following a bad head collision, though he added that early indications were “positive”.
