Hamburg beat Frankfurt 2-1 at Deutsche Bank Park on May 2, 2026, with Gronbak scoring once and assisting Vieira to secure a comeback win and all-but guarantee Bundesliga safety.
Hamburg’s win means they’ll stay up if St. Pauli fail to win their next match...
Hamburger SV snapped a six-game winless streak with a 2-1 comeback win over Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park, a result that effectively secured their place in the Bundesliga for next season.
Determined to stay up, HSV looked sharper early on. Captain Nicolás Capaldo created the first chance by threading a cross toward the box, but Frankfurt’s Michael Zetterer reacted quickly to punch it clear.
Can Uzun caused problems for Hamburg throughout the first half as he looked to open the scoring for Frankfurt. He forced a save from Daniel Heuer Fernandes in the 15th minute, and the Brazilian goalkeeper stood firm again later when Uzun worked himself into a better shooting position.
Heuer Fernandes, who hadn’t recorded a shutout since February, kept Hamburg level heading into the break. The hosts pushed before halftime, with Albert Sambi Lokonga testing Michael Zetterer and Bakery Jatta rattling the crossbar, but neither side could find the net.
The deadlock broke early in the second half when Uzun finally got his goal. A loose pass from Hamburg in their own third let Jonathan Burkardt slip Uzun through, and the Turkish international finished past Heuer Fernandes to put Frankfurt ahead.
Frankfurt’s lead lasted less than two minutes before Hamburg hit back. On the second phase of a corner, the ball came to Albert Grønbæk, who drilled a low shot home to equalize. Just before the hour mark, HSV completed the turnaround as Grønbæk threaded a perfect pass to Fábio Vieira, and the Portuguese midfielder took it in stride before beating Zetterer.

Frankfurt, still pushing for a European spot next season, responded with a triple substitution to spark a comeback. Younes Ebnoutalib forced a stop from Heuer Fernandes in the opening minute of stoppage time, but it was their final chance. Playing the last stretch a man down after Rasmus Kristensen picked up two yellows, Die Adler fell to just one win in their last six league matches.
The loss leaves Frankfurt seventh, with Freiburg able to overtake them by the end of the round. For Hamburg, the win snaps a three-game road losing streak. Merlin Polzin’s side are now safe from automatic relegation, and can confirm their top-flight status if St. Pauli don’t win.
