Bundesliga: Gladbach Thrash Hoffenheim 4-0 to End UCL Hopes on Final Day

Hoffenheim’s fifth-place finish confirmed despite Gladbach mauling

Hoffenheim’s Champions League hopes ended with a 4-0 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park. The loss also brought their five-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to an end.

Hoffenheim had a chance to go ahead early when Fisnik Asllani played through Andrej Kramaric, but Kramaric shot straight at Moritz Nicolas from close range. Gladbach made them pay and took the lead through Tomas Brolin, who finished after Wael Mohya knocked the ball down and it trickled in off the post.

Hoffenheim’s situation worsened when they heard Stuttgart had also gone ahead. Things got worse on the pitch as Haris Tabakovic made it 2-0 against his parent club. A deflected cross fell to him, and he slotted home his 13th goal of the season.

With so much at stake, Hoffenheim still couldn’t seize control. Gladbach looked more likely to score again. Ozan Kabak made a brilliant block to stop a certain goal from Nico Elvedi, and Oliver Baumann held onto Tabakovic’s point-blank header from a corner to deny him a second.

Hoffenheim needed a response in the second half, but their hopes of a comeback took another hit almost immediately. Tim Lemperle picked up a second yellow for a needless challenge on Kevin Diks and was sent off, leaving Hoffenheim with 10 men.

Gladbach almost made it worse after the hour mark when Tabakovic slotted home, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

There was no stopping the third goal, though. Kevin Diks curled a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the box after Nico Elvedi laid it off.

Gladbach’s day got even better with the return of last season’s top scorer Tim Kleindienst from a long injury layoff. The win was sealed late on when substitute Robin Hack calmly finished a one-on-one against Oliver Baumann.

The result extended Gladbach’s unbeaten home run to seven games and secured a comfortable mid-table finish. Hoffenheim will play in the Europa League next season after finishing fifth, their best league placing since 2017/18.
