After matching the 20-assist record, Bruno Fernandes can set a new Premier League high when United face Brighton on the final day of the season.

Bruno Fernandes matches Premier League assist record held by Henry and De Bruyne...

Bruno Fernandes said he felt proud to equal the Premier League assist record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester United midfielder now has his sights set on claiming the record outright.

The 31-year-old played a key role in United securing third place, providing the assist for Bryan Mbeumo’s goal in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. The pass marked his 20th of the season.

With that assist, Fernandes became only the third player in Premier League history to reach 20 assists in a single campaign, joining Henry’s 2002-03 tally for Arsenal and De Bruyne’s 2019-20 total for Manchester City.

“Obviously I'm very proud,” Fernandes said on the Old Trafford touchline.

“We're speaking about Thierry and Kevin, two of the main names of the Premier League, and for me I'm very grateful and I'm very happy to do it. It's a very proud moment.”

Fernandes was named United’s Player of the Year for a record fifth time. He now has the chance to hit 21 assists in Sunday’s final match of the season away at Brighton.

“Let's see,” he said. “It doesn't change the way I play my game, so I will still have to create things for my team, and hopefully it can happen.

“But if it doesn't happen, I'm already very happy because I've never done 20 assists in the Premier League. I've never done 19 either, so even if I had finished with 19, I would be very happy.”

When Mbeumo scored from his cross in the 76th minute, Fernandes was mobbed by teammates. Even goalkeeper Senne Lammens joined in with every United outfield player to celebrate. Fernandes said he only started thinking about the record after picking up his 19th assist.
