The Vegas Golden Knights beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 on the road to open the Western Conference final and take a 1-0 series lead over the President’s Trophy winners.
Colorado entered the series as heavy favorites after winning eight of nine playoff games this year. The Avalanche also won the season series 3-2, although Vegas took the most recent matchup a month ago.
The first period at Ball Arena in Denver was evenly matched. Both teams recorded 10 shots and successfully killed a penalty each, leaving the score tied heading into the first intermission.
The second period followed the same pattern, with neither side able to break the deadlock.
The breakthrough came with 7:30 left. Vegas pushed the puck the other way, and Brandon Saad set up Dylan Coghlan for an uncontested shot. Scott Wedgewood had no chance as the puck beat him to the right and went in.

Things got worse for Colorado a few minutes later. After Ross Colton went to the penalty box for roughing, Vegas capitalized on the man advantage.
Just under a minute into the power play, the Golden Knights made it count. Tomas Hertl passed to Mitch Marner, who skated across the ice before finding Pavel Dorofeyev.

Trailing 2-0 after two periods, Colorado found themselves in a tough spot. To make matters worse, they conceded a third goal just 94 seconds into the final frame.
On a two-on-one break, Ben Hutton chose to shoot instead of passing to Brett Howden. Scott Wedgewood made the initial save, but the puck bounced right to Howden, who brought it down and tapped it in from close range.

They finally got on the board minutes later when Valeri Nichushkin finished off a centering pass from Ross Colton, cutting the deficit with 14:07 left in regulation.
On the power play, Nathan MacKinnon made a strong move to beat his defender and get a shot on net. Gabriel Landeskog was there to put home the rebound and beat Carter Hart.

Colorado kept pushing for the equalizer and pulled their goalie for a sixth skater. The gamble didn’t pay off, as Vegas sealed the game with 45 seconds left.
Devon Toews’ shot was blocked in front of the Vegas net, and Jack Eichel fired at the empty Colorado net. His attempt missed and bounced off the boards. Nic Dowd got to it first and fired into the open net to secure the win for the Golden Knights.
