Fiorentina edged closer to Serie A safety with a narrow win over Lazio.

Fiorentina stretched their unbeaten run in Serie A to five games (W3, D2) and moved eight points clear of the relegation zone after Robin Gosens’ first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Lazio at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Even though Lazio’s away games have been typically tight before the break, with just five first-half goals across their 15 league trips this season, it was the visitors who controlled the early exchanges.

Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea kept the game level with two key interventions, stretching to tip away Mattia Zaccagni’s early effort before blocking Matteo Cancellieri with his legs soon after.

The contest had drifted into a dull stalemate by halftime, yet out of that lull came an unlikely opener.

Gosens climbed above Manuel Lazzari to connect with Jack Harrison’s cross and, although the German’s header bounced off the ground with little pace, the placement was good enough to beat Edoardo Motta in the Lazio goal.

After a heavy midweek loss to Crystal Palace damaged their UEFA Conference League hopes, Serie A survival is now Fiorentina’s only priority.

For the home fans, it was another encouraging step in their turnaround after a dismal start to the season and a welcome response to their nightmare showing in England.

After a heavy midweek loss to Crystal Palace dealt a major blow to their UEFA Conference League hopes, Serie A survival is now Fiorentina’s only priority.

For long spells, La Viola looked comfortable chasing three vital points. Their biggest scare came in the 65th minute when a lengthy VAR check followed a Lazio penalty appeal, but referee Michael Fabbri stood by his original call and waved play on.
