NHL Playoffs: Golden Knights Beat Mammoth 5-4 OT, Series 2-2

Golden Knights win in OT to tie series 2-2 with Mammoth

Michael Carcone, Nick Schmaltz and Cole Smith netted first playoff goals as Mammoth rallied, but fell 5-4 in OT to Golden Knights.

Shea Theodore’s first playoff point was the Game 4 OT winner...

Shea Theodore scored the overtime winner as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Utah Mammoth 5-4 in Game 4 Monday night to even the series 2-2.

Theodore, who had no points in the series before his goal, beat Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka after he lost his stick.

Jack Eichel recorded three assists on the night.

Vegas is now 7-7 in overtime as the road team in the playoffs, 12-14 overall.

They thought they had scored the game-winner earlier, but it was waved off for offside.

Game 5 shifts back to Vegas on April 29. They join the Minnesota Wild-Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning as the only playoff series tied 2-2 after four games.

Vegas Dominates Opening Frame

Vegas controlled the first period. They scored twice, limited Utah to just three shots, and killed both Mammoth power plays.

Pavel Dorofeyev netted his first goal of the playoffs to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead just 1:12 in. Ivan Barbashev (2) and Jack Eichel (3) tallied the assists.

Entering Game 4, Vegas was 42-15 in the playoffs when scoring first. That .737 win percentage ranks fourth-best in the NHL.

Utah’s Michael Carcone had a chance to tie it 1-1 after Vegas’ goal, but missed a wide-open net.

It would have been his first playoff goal and the first playoff point of his career.

That miss proved costly.

On Utah’s second power play of the first, they got caught sleeping as Vegas doubled the lead.

Brett Howden scored a short-handed goal for his first of the playoffs to make it 2-0 with under two minutes left in the first. Mitch Marner notched his third assist of the series.

Howden became the sixth player in Golden Knights history to score a short-handed playoff goal.

Things didn’t get better for the Mammoth to start the second.

Cole Smith scored his first career playoff goal on a tip-in just 3:16 into the second as Vegas pushed the lead to 3-0. Noah Hanifin (3) and Colton Sissons (2) picked up the assists.

But it took only 29 seconds for momentum to swing completely in Utah’s favor.

Nick Schmaltz and Ian Cole both scored their first goals of the playoffs within 29 seconds of each other to cut it to 3-2. That tied the Tampa Bay Lightning for the fastest goals by teammates these playoffs.

It was Schmaltz’s first career playoff goal in his 11th NHL season, while Cole netted his fourth in his 16th season.

Utah had a chance to tie it on their third power play of the game shortly after the two goals, but couldn’t convert.

That changed in the third.

To keep the comeback going, Utah tied the game just 1:12 into the third period.

After missing an open net on the power play earlier, Carcone didn’t miss his second chance. He scored his first career playoff goal to tie it 3-3.

Mikhail Sergachev (2) and Dylan Guenther (3) recorded the assists.

Utah’s rally didn’t stop there. A few minutes later, the Salt Lake City crowd was loud enough to hear nationwide.

Clayton Keller scored his first of the playoffs off assists from Schmaltz and Sergachev, capping four straight goals and giving Utah its first lead.

Sergachev joined Mikael Granlund, Jake Guentzel, Jackson LaCombe, and Mats Zuccarello as the only players this postseason with three assists in a game.

But Utah’s lead lasted barely five minutes.

Howden scored his second of the game on a tip-in to tie it 4-4 with 9:35 left in the third.

Eichel and Hanifin each tallied their second assist of the game and fourth of the series.

The game stayed scoreless through the final nine minutes and went to overtime, where the Golden Knights won it.

Vegas outshot Utah 36-31, while Utah outhit Vegas 55-43.
