As a coach, he led Romania to Euro 1984 and managed top clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, and Galatasaray, winning numerous titles, including the UEFA Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2009.
“The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital announces that today, Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at around 8:30 PM, the death of Mr Mircea Lucescu was declared.
“Mr Mircea Lucescu was one of the most decorated Romanian football coaches and players, the first to lead the Romanian national team to qualify for a European Championship in 1984.

In the ICU, he'll receive specialized care from a team of intensivists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. They'll be keeping a close eye on his vital signs, managing his pain, and providing life-sustaining treatments as needed.
Mircea Lucescu, the legendary Romanian football manager, was rushed to Bucharest University Hospital on March 29th after falling ill during a technical meeting before a training session with the national team. He subsequently resigned as Romania's head coach on April 2nd due to health concerns.
Lucescu, 80, suffered a heart attack and was placed in an induced coma as his condition worsened. His family, including wife Neli and granddaughter Marilu, rushed to his bedside. The Romanian football community is hoping for his recovery, with many expressing support and admiration for the coach's contributions to the sport.
