James Rodriguez, Colombia's soccer captain, was hospitalized for three days due to severe dehydration after a friendly match against France. The 34-year-old former Real Madrid and Everton player was substituted off after 63 minutes in Colombia's 3-1 loss to France in Landover, Maryland, appearing sluggish and disconnected from the game.
The Colombian Football Federation stated that Rodriguez's hospitalization was due to a non-sports-related medical condition and not related to any musculoskeletal injuries. He's currently recovering at his residence in Minneapolis and is expected to make a full recovery.
He “presented symptoms of severe dehydration that required his hospitalization over the past 72 hours,” said the federation.
Rodriguez was taken to hospital in Minnesota, where he plays for Major League Soccer side Minnesota United, “for preventive clinical monitoring and recovery.”
Minnesota United confirmed Rodriguez is recovering, telling AFP his status for this weekend's clash with LA Galaxy will be updated on Friday.

James Rodriguez joined Minnesota United in February but has only played 39 minutes due to injury. The Colombian Football Federation clarified that his recent hospitalization wasn't related to those injuries.
Rodriguez's physical fitness is uncertain ahead of Colombia's World Cup campaign, where they'll face Uzbekistan, DR Congo, and Portugal in Group K. He's expected to captain Colombia, but his participation in the tournament is still up in the air.
Rodriguez was the top scorer in the 2014 World Cup, joining Real Madrid soon after. He's still a key player for Colombia.
Head coach Nestor Lorenzo has faced criticism for starting Rodriguez against France and Croatia despite his lack of match fitness.
