Eddie Howe's Newcastle United suffers defeat to Crystal Palace

Newcastle United's struggles to consolidate good passages of play have blighted their season, according to manager Eddie Howe. Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta scores twice, including a stoppage-time penalty, to sink Newcastle United's faint hopes of European qualification.

“There's no way we should have lost that game. We had a younger team today, but that's no excuse...”

Eddie Howe's taking full responsibility for Newcastle's 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace, where they let a lead slip with two late goals.

Newcastle were leading through William Osula's goal until Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta scored an 80th-minute equalizer and converted a stoppage-time penalty. The loss drops Newcastle to 14th.

“I ‌always have to look at myself first. I always say that. I'm number one accountable,” Howe said.

“There's no way we should have lost that game. We had a younger team today, but that's no excuse. There's enough experienced internationals on the pitch to navigate the defensive ‌aspect well enough.”

Newcastle's struggles to close out games continued, with 25 points dropped from winning positions this season. Manager Eddie Howe was frustrated with his team's inability to finish games strongly, saying “Those numbers are incredible. It's blighted our season.”

Howe's side have been inconsistent, and the results have been telling.

Newcastle's next up is Bournemouth at St. James' Park on Saturday. Can they bounce back?
