Ghana is nearing a decision on its new national team coach, with Paulo Bento and Carlos Queiroz leading the pack. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering these experienced Portuguese tacticians for the top job, following Otto Addo's departure after a string of disappointing results.
The GFA is prioritizing a short-term appointment to lead the team through the World Cup, with a longer-term decision to follow. Bento, a former Portugal and South Korea coach, brings experience and a structured approach, while Queiroz has managed several national teams, including Portugal, Iran, and Egypt.
The Black Stars are in a rush to secure leadership with just over 60 days to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The GFA is prioritising a short-term appointment, aiming to get a coach who'll lead the team through the World Cup before deciding on a longer-term plan. This approach lets them assess performance on the big stage before committing to someone permanent.
Sources indicate the GFA has had extensive talks with Bento and Queiroz, impressed by their experience.
Bento, a former Portugal international, has significant pedigree: he managed Portugal from 2010-2014, leading them to Euro 2012 semis and the 2014 World Cup.
Bento recently led South Korea to the 2022 World Cup knockout stage.
Queiroz is widely regarded as one of the most experienced international coaches, with a long track record in top roles.
The former Iran national football team boss, Carlos Queiroz, has an impressive resume. He's coached Portugal and was assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. Crucially for Ghana, Queiroz has African experience, having led Egypt to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final and a World Cup play-off.
Queiroz's experience in African football is seen as a big plus, with GFA officials liking his adaptability to the continent's demands.
Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League 2019 wins, is another name in the mix.
Santos' major tournament record is getting attention, though he's not as far along in talks.

The new coach will take charge of Ghana in Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama at the 2026 World Cup. Ghana's last two World Cup appearances ended in group stage exits, so the pressure's on to get out of the group this time.
