Magisterial Mika Godts guides Ajax to away win with world-class solo goal. Ajax stay four points behind Feyenoord in battle for UCL spot...

Mika Godts’ majestic solo goal was the highlight as Ajax beat NAC Breda 2-0 away on Saturday evening.

Relegation-threatened NAC Breda were desperate for a win, having taken just two victories from their last 19 league games. Ajax, meanwhile, needed every point they could get after dropping four points behind Feyenoord in the race for second place and direct qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.

NAC and Ajax traded early chances, with Wout Weghorst for Ajax and NAC’s Charles-Andreas Brym and Max Balard all trying but failing to open the scoring in the first 15 minutes.

Ajax broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Steven Berghuis played Mika Godts in with a long ball, and the Belgian drove into the box before squaring it across to Oscar Gloukh on the other side of Bielica’s goal. The midfielder finished into the left corner for his first Eredivisie goal since early January.

A touch of unique brilliance earned
A moment of brilliance gave Ajax a two-goal lead just before half-time. Mika Godts picked up the ball near halfway and drove deep into NAC territory. The Belgian winger beat Clint Leemans, Raul Paula, Fredrik Oldrup Jensen, and Leemans again in the box before rounding Bielica and finishing a stunning solo run with a simple tap-in.

Paula and Mohamed Nassoh tested Indonesian keeper Maarten Paes shortly after the break, but the former Dallas goalkeeper kept them out with two strong reflex saves.

Paes came up big again when Kamal Sowah fired at goal, expertly pushing the shot away for a corner. At the other end, Polish keeper Daniel Bielica showed his quality by denying Godts a second with a smart save in the 78th minute.

In a quiet second half where Ajax created almost nothing and rarely left their own half, the biggest chance came in the 87th minute when Ghanaian veteran André Ayew glanced a cross just wide of Paes’ goal.

Ajax kept things quiet at their end too, though Rayane Bounida hit the post in the final minutes to keep it 2-0. Interim manager Óscar García’s side claimed just their second win in six weeks to stay in the fight for second.
