Late Palhinha strike seals tense 1-0 win for Spurs in relegation scrap

Joao Palhinha’s 82nd-minute goal gives Tottenham first PL win of 2026 and ends 15-game winless run. Spurs stay in relegation zone, two points behind West Ham.

Tottenham end 15-match winless streak in PL as Joao Palhinha scores late to beat relegated Wolves 1-0. First clean sheet since New Year’s Day for Spurs...

Relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League win of 2026 and avoided a club-record 16-game top-flight winless run with a vital 1-0 victory over bottom-side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

With their eight-year Premier League stay officially over, Wolves hosted a Spurs side still fighting for survival under Roberto De Zerbi. He’s overseen improved performances but had taken just one point from his first two games in charge.

Tottenham started on the front foot as expected, but neither side created a chance of note in the first half hour. Any early promise from Spurs faded as half-time approached, with no shots on target in an increasingly quiet opening period.

The main talking point of the half was the decision not to dismiss Andre for a strong challenge on Yves Bissouma. Bissouma recovered to see out the half, unlike injury-hit teammate Dominic Solanke.

Looking for fresh impetus, De Zerbi introduced Mathys Tel at half-time. Soon after the restart, Spurs’ best chance so far fell to Xavi Simons, who curled a close-range effort wide.

News of West Ham United’s goal soon reached the stadium, raising tension among the travelling fans as first-half substitute Richarlison fired an ambitious effort well wide. It went from bad to worse when Simons went down injured and was eventually stretchered off, adding to the North London side’s growing injury list.

Adam Armstrong caused problems at the back for the visitors, who looked far from comfortable heading into the final 20 minutes. A bullet header from Rodrigo Bentancur forced a save from Jose Sa for the first shot on target of the match.

Time was running out for Spurs, but they finally broke through in the 82nd minute. A Pedro Porro corner dropped for Richarlison, who dug out a shot that substitute João Palhinha turned in from close range.

An Everton equaliser in the other key game briefly brought more good news, but a late West Ham winner keeps them two points above Tottenham. Spurs stay in the last relegation spot with four games left.

A first clean sheet in any competition since New Year’s Day gives De Zerbi something to build on, but survival is still out of their hands. The prospect of joining Wolves in the Championship - and a first relegation in almost 50 years - remains very real.
