Frenchman Arthur Fils defeated higher-ranked Russian Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6(2) to lift the Barcelona Open on Sunday, his first title since 2024.

It was the 21-year-old’s fourth ATP title and third on clay, coming after he returned in February from an injury layoff of almost eight months.

Rublev couldn’t match Fils as the Frenchman sharpened his forehand returns, clipping the lines and firing winners past the frustrated fifth seed to take the first set in 31 minutes.

Fils reeled off seven straight games before Rublev finally held serve for 1-1 in the second set. The 28-year-old saved seven break points in a 13-minute game to hold at 2-2.

Fils wrong-footed Rublev with a backhand drop shot to earn a key break for 4-2. But serving for the title at 5-3, the world No. 30 made three unforced errors in a row to hand the break back.

Rublev saved three match points to hold for 5-5, then broke Fils to move ahead 6-5. But Fils broke straight back to force a tiebreak, which he took 7-2.
