Max Verstappen is having a laugh at the new F1 cars, saying they're more like Mario Kart than actual racing machines. The four-time world champion crashed in qualifying in Australia and still managed to finish sixth, but he's not enjoying the new era of F1 cars.
Verstappen joked that he's swapped his simulator for a Nintendo Switch, saying “I'm practising with Mario Kart, actually. Finding the mushrooms is going quite well, the blue shells are a bit more difficult.” He's frustrated with the 50-50 split between conventional and electrical power, and features like straight-line mode and boost buttons, which he thinks are more like a video game.
Despite the challenges, Verstappen is optimistic that things will improve as the new rules and regulations are adjusted. He's had discussions with F1 and the FIA, and they're working towards making the sport better.
The new cars are equipped with advanced battery management and energy harvesting systems, utilizing a 50-50 split between conventional and electrical power. This hybrid approach is designed to optimize performance and efficiency.
The cars also feature exciting modes like straight-line mode, active aero, overtake, and boost buttons, which Max Verstappen describes as feeling like a video game. These features are likely to make the driving experience even more thrilling for fans.

Max Verstappen is taking on a new challenge this year - the Nurburgring 24-hour race! He's teaming up with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport and will be driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 alongside Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon, and Daniel Juncadella. This iconic endurance race is happening on May 16-17, and Verstappen is stoked to be part of it, saying, “The Nurburgring is a special place. There's no other track like it.”
"I wish I had a bit more fun for sure,” he said of Formula 1 at the moment.
"I mean, I get to race the Nordschleife (Nurburgring) and I hope in the coming years I can do Spa and hopefully Le Mans.
"So I'm combining stuff and I'm also doing other stuff that is a lot of fun.
"It's a bit conflicted because I don't really enjoy to drive the car, but I do enjoy working with all the people in the team and from the engine department as well.”
Bit of a rough weekend, but gave it my best. Still proud of where we are as a team @redbullracing, we keep pushing 💪 pic.twitter.com/Yc5LqbE34c
