UWCL: Barcelona FC Women Throttle Real Madrid 6-2 in Champions League Thriller
| Barca blasts Madrid 6-2 in Champions League |
Barcelona FC Women dominated Real Madrid 6-2 in the Women's Champions League quarter-final first leg. Ewa Pajor scored a brace as the Catalans took a commanding lead.
“We already want the game at Camp Nou to arrive, with our fans, and there are still 90 minutes to go...”
Barcelona FC Women's team crushed Real Madrid 6-2 in the first leg of their Women's Champions League quarter-final match at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium. Ewa Pajor and Esmee Brugts scored within the first 13 minutes, putting Barcelona in a commanding position. Pajor scored a brace, while Irene Paredes, Vicky Lopez, and Alexia Putellas also found the back of the net for Barcelona. Linda Caicedo scored two goals for Real Madrid, but it wasn't enough to prevent the defeat.
Barcelona's dominance was evident, and they have now gone 25 games unbeaten. The return leg will be played at Camp Nou next week, but Barcelona seems to have one foot in the semi-finals already.
“We know there are things to improve, as always, and that's always what we're looking for, right? To get closer to excellence,” Putellas told TV3.
“We already want the game at Camp Nou to arrive, with our fans, and there are still 90 minutes to go, but we're very happy with today's result.”
Barcelona FC Women, currently unbeaten in 25 games, are on a roll. They're looking strong for a spot in the semi-finals, especially without Aitana Bonmati, their three-time Ballon d'Or winner, who's injured.
The team's on a hot streak, having reached five straight finals and aiming for an eighth consecutive semi-final appearance. They're the three-time winners looking to make it big again.
The opener for Barca came from a clever play involving Patri Guijarro and Alexia Putellas, setting up Pajor for an easy finish. Guijarro's dink over the top allowed Putellas to square it for Pajor, who stabbed her fifth Champions League goal this season into an empty net.
Brugts pounced on Lopez's looping cross, and despite Misa Rodriguez's effort, the ball dropped over the line. Maelle Lakrar couldn't clear it, giving Barca a 2-0 lead.
Pajor had a great chance to extend Barca's lead, but went too close to Rodriguez, who managed to deflect the ball to safety. Madrid's hopes were revived a few minutes later when Caicedo scored, getting past Barca's defense, rounding Cata Coll, and firing home.
Madrid's joy was short-lived, as Paredes restored Barca's two-goal lead just two minutes later with a powerful header from a corner kick.
Pajor's clinical finish seals Barca's lead
Pajor punished Madrid with her second goal, coolly finishing after being sent through by 18-year-old midfielder Clara Serrajordi.
Lopez sealed the deal with a low finish from Caroline Graham Hansen's cut-back, further humiliating their rivals. Barca's dominance was clear, having won all four matches against Real Madrid this season, scoring 16 goals to Madrid's two.
Madrid's got a tough road ahead - they face Barca again in Liga F this weekend, and then the second leg next week. That's three Clasicos in nine days, starting with this tough loss.
On the bright side for Madrid, Caicedo's been a nightmare for Barca, and she proved it again with a curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box, pulling one back for the hosts.
Real Madrid's Linda Caicedo scored a goal at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium, but Irene Paredes quickly restored Barcelona's two-goal lead. In the second half, Pajor and Vicky Lopez netted goals, and although Caicedo scored again to give Madrid a glimmer of hope, Alexia Putellas sealed the win with a late penalty, putting Barcelona one foot into the semi-finals.

Putellas sealed the win with a penalty late on, after Hansen was fouled, making it tough for Madrid to comeback.
Madrid's never made it to the semis before, and they'll need a first-ever win against Barca in ages to turn things around - Barca's won 22 of their 23 meetings.

“Their two goals could have been avoided, but we have to be happy, proud and pleased with what we did in this match,” said Guijarro.
“Let's see if we can repeat it in the second leg.”
