UEL: Aston Villa Cruise to Europa League Quarter-Finals
| Villa Reach Europa League quarters after beating Lille |
Aston Villa beat Lille 2-0 (3-0 aggregate) to reach UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, extending their winning streak in the competition to 7 matches.
The tiniest of deflections prevented substitute Ollie Watkins from scoring, while on the very next attack...
The opening stages were cautious, with both teams avoiding risks. Lille had a one-goal advantage from the first leg, so Villa was focused.
Aston Villa took care to avoid errors, and it paid off. The game was evenly matched in the early stages.
With clear-cut chances almost completely absent, Douglas Luiz’s early blocked effort when in a promising position for Villa inside the box was one of the very few moments of any note in a flat start to the second leg.
With less than five minutes to go before the interval, the match finally kicked into life when Amadou Onana’s towering header from a corner forced an impressive save from Berke Ozer to keep Les Dogues in contention.
Remarkably, that was the only shot on target in a subdued first 45 minutes at Villa Park.
The home supporters’ nerves were eased significantly, though, after 54 minutes when John McGinn found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
A huge kick from Emiliano Martinez put Jadon Sancho in a great position deep inside Lille’s half, and he kept his composure to pick out the unmarked Scotland international, who fired the ball confidently past Ozer and into the bottom corner.
The visitors thought they had grabbed a lifeline just after the hour mark through the ageless Olivier Giroud.

Giroud's excellent strike was instantly ruled out for offside to the relief of the Villa fans.
At that point, with Lille having to throw caution to the wind, the contest opened up significantly, and the hosts created two huge chances in quick succession that came agonisingly close to wrapping the tie up.
The tiniest of deflections prevented substitute Ollie Watkins from scoring, while on the very next attack, Sancho’s rapid strike from inside the box cannoned back off the post.
With full-time on the horizon, the Premier League side made sure of their place in the quarter-finals as Leon Bailey stroked the ball home from close range after being teed up by Watkins.
The Villans will face Italian opponents in the form of Roma or Bologna in the last eight, as Unai Emery seeks to win the UEL as a head coach for the fifth time in his career.
Meanwhile, Lille must now attempt to put their European exit behind them as they travel to Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
