Michael Valgren has ended an eight-year wait for a WorldTour win, taking the chequered flag on stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico in thrilling fashion. The Danish rider outsmarted Julian Alaphilippe on the final climb, securing a solo victory and sparking celebrations for EF Education-EasyPost.
Valgren, 32, had been part of a breakaway group that formed early in the stage, and he used his experience to outmaneuver Alaphilippe on the tough climb to Fermo. This win marks a major milestone in Valgren's career, and he's now looking to build on this momentum.
“It’s unbelievable,” Valgren said after celebrating with his teammates at the finish line. “We all worked so hard for this. I had a really good winter at home with all my family, and they supported the team, and I supported them. We just had a baby one month ago, so it’s for them, it’s for the team. For me, I’m speechless.”
Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) secured second place, narrowly missing the top spot, while Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) took third. Del Toro finished just 19 seconds behind the winner, pipping race leader Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) to the podium [1].
Pellizzari's 19-second deficit meant he lost the blue jersey, now trailing the Mexican overall leader by 23 seconds. The Italian's tough day was a far cry from his pre-injury form, and he'll be hoping to bounce back soon [2].
Michael Valgren achieved his first WT level victory in almost 8 years. Last came in 2018 Amstel Gold Race. It's been a long journey, overcoming all the difficulties. Tastes so good, 🏆 Stage 5 of 🔱#TirrenoAdriatico after being in breakaway for +140 km.pic.twitter.com/Ntbvb823he

Mads Pedersen's WorldTour comeback story is one of immense grit and determination. After crashing at the Route d’Occitanie, the charismatic Dane faced a daunting recovery, overcoming a fractured pelvis, dislocated hip, and severe knee damage, including ACL and MCL ligament injuries, as well as a shattered meniscus.
