Ligue 1 Clash: Lens Says No to PSG's Postponement

Lens opposes PSG's request to postpone Ligue 1 match

Lens pushes back against PSG's request to postpone Ligue 1 match ahead of Champions League quarterfinal vs Liverpool. Lens opposes PSG's postponement request, citing domestic league integrity.

“Any changes to the fixture list ‌fall exclusively within the remit of the French football authorities...”

Lens are pushing back against PSG's request to postpone their top-of-the-table Ligue 1 match scheduled for April 11, citing concerns about fairness and the integrity of the domestic league. PSG, the reigning European champions, want to delay the match to get extra rest before their Champions League quarterfinals against Liverpool.

The Lens fixture falls right between PSG's home and away games against Liverpool, with the first leg on April 8 and the second leg on April 14. Lens argues that rescheduling would disrupt their schedule, leaving them without a match for 15 days and then playing games every three days, which wouldn't fit their
resources.

Liverpool will be busy on April 11, hosting Fulham in the Premier League, while PSG were originally scheduled to face Lens in Ligue 1 on the same day. This fixture clash has led to PSG requesting a postponement, citing their Champions League quarter-final ties against Liverpool, but Lens has opposed the move.

PSG and Lens are neck-and-neck in Ligue 1, separated by just one point, with Luis Enrique's side having a game in hand. The outcome of this scheduling conflict could have significant implications for the French title race.

Lens has opposed this request, stating that changing the date would deprive them of competition for 15 days and disrupt their schedule. Strasbourg has also requested a postponement of their Ligue 1 match against Brest to prepare for their Europa Conference League quarterfinal against Mainz.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) will decide on the requests on Thursday. Lens is concerned that accommodating PSG's request would set a precedent where the French league is treated as an “adjustment variable” for European competitions.

“In a spirit of responsibility and restraint, Racing Club de Lens made it clear to Paris Saint-Germain, from the very first enquiries, that it did not wish to see this date changed...,” Lens said in a statement on Monday.

“It seems to us, in fact, that a worrying sentiment is taking hold: that of a French league gradually being relegated to the status of an adjustment variable at the whim of certain parties' European imperatives.

“A peculiar conception of sporting fairness, for which it is difficult to find ‌an equivalent in other major continental competitions.”

Lens is taking a strong stance, saying the dispute raises questions about the status of domestic competition. They're essentially saying, “If PSG gets a free pass, what's the point of Ligue 1?”

“Beyond this specific case, the question raised is a more fundamental one: that of the respect due to the competition itself. For one is entitled to wonder when, on its own turf, the league sometimes seems to be relegated to second place behind other ambitions, however legitimate they may be,” the club added.

PSG's request to postpone their Ligue 1 match against Lens isn't new - they've done this before. During their Champions League round-of-16 tie against Chelsea, their match against Nantes was postponed, giving them five days off between the two legs. Now, they're asking for the same favor to prepare for their quarterfinal against Liverpool, but Lens is pushing back, citing concerns about fairness and the integrity of the domestic league.

"Any changes to the fixture list ‌fall exclusively within the remit of the French football authorities, in accordance with the rules in force and the principle of fairness between clubs," a source close to PSG said.

“In this context, PSG and Strasbourg have requested that their match be rescheduled in order to prepare as effectively as possible for this key fixture of their ‌season.”
