Lille lose 1-0 to Aston Villa in Europa League, need big performance in second leg...

Aston Villa broke their four-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over Lille in the Europa League round of 16 first leg, thanks to Ollie Watkins' goal. The match was tight, with few chances created in the first half, but Watkins' header in the 61st minute gave Villa the lead.

The first half was cagey, with both teams struggling to create chances. Lille's Romain Perraud had the first real shot, but Emiliano Martinez made a good save. Villa's Morgan Rogers also had a chance, but it went over the bar. The teams went into halftime with no goals, but Villa's dominance in possession (55%) gave them a slight edge.

The lack of goals before halftime was surprising, given Rijeka's strong form (winning 3 of 4 games before this match) and Villa's extra time to prepare.

The lack of care and application in the final third will have worried both managers, and those in attendance had to wait until the 40th minute to see the game’s first real shot, when Morgan Rogers fired well over the crossbar from distance.

There were some signs of life as half-time beckoned, but Emiliano Martinez’s parry from Romain Perraud’s long-range strike was the only time either goalkeeper was tested before the interval.

The second half started slow, with both teams struggling to create chances. It wasn't until around the hour mark that things picked up, with a wild shot from Rogers being one of the few notable attempts.

Aston Villa took the lead through Ollie Watkins' first goal of the season, and it was a surprising one! Ezri Konsa sent a long ball forward, which was cleverly flicked on by Emiliano Buendía, allowing Watkins to nod it over Berke Ozer.

Watkins' goal was a great moment for the England international, who had been struggling to find the back of the net. The goal was his ninth in a disappointing personal campaign, and it gave Villa a crucial lead in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie against Lille.

Shortly after, the Villans were close to doubling their advantage in a more impressive fashion, but Amadou Onana’s curling strike from outside the box hit the crossbar.

Having failed to exert any kind of pressure before conceding, going behind did little to add any attacking spark for the hosts. They saw plenty of the ball in the final stages but could do nothing with it besides a Matias Fernandez-Pardo attempt that was pushed away by Martínez.

Aston Villa held onto their 1-0 lead relatively comfortably, putting them in a strong position to progress to the quarterfinals ahead of the second leg at Villa Park next week. Lille, on the other hand, have struggled at home, winning just two of their past nine games and suffering a second consecutive loss in front of their own supporters for the first time ever.

The first leg was a tight, low-scoring affair, with Ollie Watkins' header being the difference. Villa's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made some crucial saves, while Lille's attack was largely ineffective.

Lille now head to Villa Park needing a stronger attacking performance to turn the tie around.
