Benatia ends tenure as Marseille Director of Football

Marseille's football director Medhi Benatia ends collaboration with Marseille, expresses regret over break. He says club “still in the race” for Champions League.

“I leave with the feeling that I gave my all professionally, but with the regret of not having managed to calm the environment...”

Medhi Benatia has resigned as Marseille's director of football, announcing his departure on social media. “After careful consideration, I took responsibility and decided, on Monday, February 9th, to end my collaboration with OM,” he wrote.

In his post, Benatia emphasized that Marseille “is still in the race,” adding that “the goal of qualifying for the Champions League is clearly within our reach, and we are still competing to bring the Coupe de France home.”

Benatia cited the “current climate” as a factor in his decision, expressing feelings of “growing dissatisfaction, a break that I deeply regret.”

He confirmed the news that had circulated in the media earlier this week: “I have indeed submitted (not just offered) my resignation, because in my view, the club always comes before individuals, and I do not want my presence to become an obstacle or a burden for the organisation and its development.

“That is why, after careful consideration, I took responsibility and decided, on Monday, February 9th, to end my collaboration with OM.”

“I leave with the feeling that I gave my all professionally, but with the regret of not having managed to calm the environment around the group, which I believe has more than enough ability to achieve the targets set.

“Keep supporting them, encourage them as you always do! I wish the players and staff every success for the rest of the season,” he concluded.
