Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Molineux, avoiding the unwanted record of being the worst team in Premier League history. This victory marked Wolves' second win of the season, lifting them off the bottom of the table and surpassing Derby County's record low points tally from 2007-08.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, suffered a setback in their Champions League qualification hopes, winning only three of their last 10 league matches. The loss leaves them third in the table, but with Manchester United and Chelsea closing in.

They had numerous half-chances, best of which involved Douglas Luiz volleying at Jose Sa, while Toti Gomes hit wide at the other end.

Morgan Rogers also tested the Wolves goalkeeper, but things got considerably scrappier towards the end of the half, when the hosts headed into the dressing rooms having failed to score for the ninth consecutive PL outing.

Wolves turned it up a gear after the break and snatched the lead on the hour mark. Adam Armstrong's mishit pass found Joao Gomes, who capitalized with a thunderous shot that bounced off the bar and in.

Villa pushed hard for an equalizer, with Ian Maatsen's powerful shot forcing a decent save from Sa. The pressure was on, and the Villans were looking for a way back into the game.

Wolves dug deep to protect their lead, and it paid off - they didn't let up and almost scored again. Tammy Abraham had a late chance cleared off the line by Yerson Mosquera.

In the dying seconds, Wolves broke up the field and Rodrigo Gomes scored from the centre of the area, sealing the win.

Wolves have narrowed the gap to safety to 14 points, but their chances of staying up are still looking slim, especially since their rivals have two games in hand. As for Villa, they risk losing their third-place position this weekend and will face tough matches against Manchester United and Chelsea in the coming weeks.
