Spain Dominates Germany to Retain Women's Nations League Crown
Spain defends Women's Nations League Title with 3-0 win over Germany

Spain wins Women's Nations League for second time, beating Germany 3-0 in second leg. Claudia Pina scores twice as Spain dominates Germany to defend title.

“It was a great game from the whole team and a new trophy...”

Spain successfully defended their Women's Nations League title with a convincing 3-0 win over Germany in the second leg, following a goalless draw in the first leg last week. Claudia Pina's second-half brace, sandwiched by Vicky Lopez's strike, secured the 2023 World Cup winners' third international trophy.

Pina broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, beating Germany's goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with a low shot after a neat one-two with Mariona Caldentey. Lopez followed up seven minutes later with a curling shot into the far post, cutting in from the right. Pina sealed the win in the 74th minute with a solo goal, winning the ball back and firing spectacularly into the top corner from distance.

The victory marks Spain's second Women's Nations League title, having previously won against France in the inaugural edition. Aitana Bonmatí, the three-time Ballon d'Or winner, was notably absent due to a leg fracture sustained in training, but her replacement, Vicky Lopez, made a significant impact.

A record crowd of 55,843 packed Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium, witnessing Sonia Bermudez's Spain claim their first trophy under her leadership. Despite missing star player Aitana Bonmati, who fractured her leg in training, Spain delivered a convincing win.

Bermudez's side dominated the match, showcasing their strength and determination. The victory marks a promising start to Bermudez's coaching reign, and fans are eager to see what's next for the team.

Spain's Euro 2025 runners-up gave a dominant performance in the second leg, after relying on goalkeeper Cata Coll to keep them in the game during the first leg in Kaiserslautern. Coll's crucial saves were no match for Spain's attacking prowess in the second leg, as they secured a convincing 3-0 win.

“We had one objective, which was to win, and we did it,” Pina told TVE.

“It was a great game from the whole team and a new trophy,” she continued.

“(The atmosphere was) crazy, the fans, who always support us, came here, without them the victory wouldn't have been possible.”

The match was intense from the start, with Esther Gonzalez firing narrowly wide early on, and Ann-Katrin Berger saving Alexia Putellas's header. Spain's goalkeeper Cata Coll was solid, fielding two Germany efforts from distance, and it seemed Spain were in control.

Mariona Caldentey, the Arsenal playmaker, had two great chances in the first half, but somehow managed to volley over when well placed and punt another effort straight at Berger. Despite dominating possession, Spain struggled to break the deadlock, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

Germany's Nicole Anyomi had the best chance of the first half, but her shot went narrowly wide just before the break. Germany started the second half strongly, but Spain's pressure paid off in the 61st minute when Pina scored.

Pina, the Barcelona forward, exchanged passes with Caldentey before drilling home from the edge of the box. Ann-Katrin Berger got a hand to her shot, but couldn't keep it out. The goal sparked a dominant display from Spain, with Vicky Lopez adding a second goal seven minutes later.

Vicky Lopez, the teenage Barcelona sensation, scored a beauty – a curling shot that sailed past Berger, adding a second goal for Spain. She had come close earlier with a similar effort that dipped just over. This one was perfection.

Claudia Pina sealed Spain's win with an incredible solo goal, winning the ball back, driving forward, and firing into the top corner from distance. It was a fitting finish to a dominant performance.

Jenni Hermoso's Tribute

Jenni Hermoso, the former Atletico and Barcelona striker, played the final 10 minutes as a substitute and was overjoyed to win another trophy with the national team. She had been through a tough time after being forcibly kissed on the lips by former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales after Spain's 2023 World Cup win, which sparked worldwide outrage.

Hermoso's recall to the squad by coach Sonia Bermudez marked a triumphant return, and she played a role in Spain's Nations League triumph. The victory is a testament to her resilience and dedication to the sport.
