Lorient secured back-to-back Ligue 1 wins, beating 10-man Lyon 1-0 at home. This victory helps them move clear of the relegation zone.
Lorient had struggled away from home this season, with 12 of their 14 points coming at the Stade Du Mustoir. Lyon's poor form, with just one win in their previous five games, made them a tempting prospect for Lorient to gain ground in the standings.
They were clearly the better of the two sides in the first half, and went close to beating Dominik Greif on several occasions. The visiting goalkeeper first needed to be alert to keep out Jean-Victor Makengo’s low effort, while Sambou Soumano failed to connect with the ball despite the goal being at his mercy following a cross.
Both of those chances came in the opening 10 minutes, and Greif was tested again when he held Soumano’s header.
Lyon created their first real chance through Martin Satriano, but Yvon Mvogo made a crucial save. They survived further scares as Pablo Pagis' free-kick hit the post and Bamo Meite missed an open goal.
The game was heating up, with Mvogo making another great save to keep Lorient at bay. But Lorient took control towards the end of the first half, and their pressure paid off.
Lorient's Pagis scored from close range, finding the back of the net after Soumano's fortunate pass. Just as Lyon were reeling, Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off for a second yellow card, giving Lorient a man advantage.
Despite being a man down, Lyon had possession after the break, but struggled to create chances. Hans Hateboer's deflected shot was their only real attempt in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Lorient's attacks were also blunted, with Greif comfortably saving Arsene Kouassi's low drive. The second half was quieter than the first, with fewer clear-cut chances.

Lyon pushed for an equalizer, with Mvogo making crucial saves to keep Lorient ahead. Corentin Tolisso's overhead kick was tipped over, and Mvogo also blocked Afonso Moreira's effort.
Lyon's late pressure was in vain, and they could've conceded again as Kouassi's late shot hit the post. Lorient held on to secure a narrow win.
Lyon's winless run away from home continues, with five games without a victory. They're struggling to keep pace with the top three.
Lorient, on the other hand, are breathing a sigh of relief, six points clear of the relegation play-off spot. They'll look to build on this win and improve their away form in the coming weeks.
