Bayern Munich advance to German Cup quarter-finals, beating Union Berlin 3-2. Stuttgart, Freiburg, and others join them in the last eight.
“I wasn't satisfied with the ugly performance. We played weirdly, we were erratic, but in the cup it...”
Harry Kane scored a header in the first half, helping Bayern Munich secure a 3-2 win over Union Berlin and book their spot in the German Cup quarter-finals. The match was intense, with Bayern giving away two penalties and Union scoring two own-goals.
Bayern took the lead through an own goal by Union's Ilyas Ansah, before Kane doubled their advantage with a header from a Joshua Kimmich corner. Union pulled one back via a Leopold Querfeld penalty, but another own goal, this time by Diogo Leite, restored Bayern's two-goal cushion. Querfeld scored from the spot again after Kane gave away a penalty, but Bayern held on for the win.
Bayern's own-goals from set-pieces proved costly, while Union Berlin's Leopold Querfeld scored twice from the spot. The win sends Bayern through to the German Cup quarterfinals for the second time in six seasons, despite their record 20 titles.
Union Berlin had previously taken a point off Bayern this season, drawing 2-2 in Berlin earlier in November.
Union Berlin's hopes were dashed early, as Ilyas Ansah's mistake gifted Bayern a goal in the 12th minute, Joshua Kimmich's corner finding its way into the net. Bayern doubled their lead 12 minutes later, Kane heading home another Kimmich corner.
Union pulled one back from the spot, Querfeld converting after Jonathan Tah's handball. However, they gave away another goal just before halftime, Diogo Leite scoring an own goal from Michael Olise's free-kick.
Bayern Munich's Harry Kane gave away a penalty early in the second half, allowing Union Berlin's Leopold Querfeld to score and cut the deficit to one. The penalty sparked a strong reaction from the hosts, who pushed Bayern back for much of the second half. However, Bayern managed to hold on and secure their spot in the next round.
Meanwhile, defending champions Stuttgart advanced to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over 10-man Bochum. Bochum's Philipp Strompf had a disastrous first half, scoring an own goal and getting sent off before halftime. Stuttgart's Deniz Undav scored a header early in the second half, securing the win.
Bochum's Philipp Strompf had a nightmare first half, scoring an own goal and getting sent off before halftime. Stuttgart's Deniz Undav scored a header early in the second half, lifting his tally to seven goals in his past four games.
Undav said: “I wasn't satisfied with the ugly performance. We played weirdly, we were erratic, but in the cup it only matters if you progress.”
