Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi defends Mason Greenwood amid controversy and criticism.
De Zerbi says Greenwood “has paid a heavy price” following allegations.
“He has come into an environment that suits him, where he has been shown affection and supported. He has behaved well, too...”
Roberto De Zerbi has come to the defence of his striker Mason Greenwood, saying he's “a good person” ahead of Marseille's Champions League clash with Newcastle. Greenwood's strong performances in Ligue 1 haven't been enough to earn him a recall to the England national team, but De Zerbi insists he's not the person portrayed by the English media.
The Italian coach believes Greenwood is “a very different person” from his public image, and is focused on his footballing abilities. De Zerbi's comments come as Marseille prepare to face Newcastle in the Champions League this Tuesday.
“I never get involved in people's private lives, not even my own children's. But what I can say is that he's a good person,” said Roberto De Zerbi at the press conference.

Mason Greenwood's situation is complex, with allegations of domestic violence and attempted rape made against him. His partner shared evidence on social media, leading to significant consequences for Greenwood.
“He has come into an environment that suits him, where he has been shown affection and supported. He has behaved well, too.
“He is a reserved, introverted character. I know his family very well: they are good people. When I look at him, it saddens me what has happened to him, because I know a different person to the one described in England,” the Italian coach said.
Angel Gomes, the England international and former Manchester United teammate of Mason Greenwood, was asked about Greenwood's situation, saying: “It all depends on the environment you give him.” This comment comes as Greenwood continues to face scrutiny over allegations made against him.
“He's a really nice guy. If you ask any member of staff, when he's on the pitch, he's enjoying himself. As a teammate, it's easier. As a friend, it's even better.”
