KuPS edges closer to title as HJK's hopes fade



The 2025 Veikkausliiga title race remains intense, with five teams still in contention. However, HJK Helsinki's championship hopes suffered another setback after a 3-1 loss to league leaders KuPS. Meanwhile, Inter Turku bounced back from poor form with a win over Ilves, moving into second place and keeping their title dreams alive.

KuPS maintained their top spot in the Veikkausliiga standings after a 3-1 win over HJK Helsinki, dealing a significant blow to the record winners' title hopes. Despite having opportunities to gain an advantage after their midweek match, HJK struggled to capitalize, ultimately falling behind early in the match.


Otto Ruoppi's impressive long-range shot gave KuPS an early lead, but HJK equalized through Jere Kallinen's precise finish. However, KuPS regained the upper hand with Piotr Parzyszek's penalty kick, and Agon Sadiku sealed the win with a late goal. Meanwhile, Inter Turku bounced back from poor form with a 2-1 victory over Ilves, keeping them in contention for the title.


HJK took the lead in the second half when Teemu Pukki set up Jere Kallinen for a precise strike that found the bottom corner. However, KuPS quickly leveled the score when Piotr Parzyszek converted a penalty after KuPS's Bob Armah was fouled by HJK goalkeeper Ricardo Friedrich.


KuPS sealed the win in the 90th minute when Agon Sadiku scored his second goal of the match, capping off a 3-1 victory. The result leaves HJK struggling in fifth place, 10 points behind KuPS, and still searching for their first win in the Championship Group.






Inter Turku bounced back from recent struggles with a 2-1 win over Ilves, moving back into second place. Ilves took the lead through Joona Veteli's penalty, but Inter Turku's fortunes turned with two goals in quick succession from Dimitri Legbo, securing the win and keeping their title hopes alive.





FC Inter Turku trails KuPS by four points but has a game in hand, keeping their title hopes alive. Meanwhile, Ilves' challenge appears to be losing steam, managing only two points from their last four matches despite having played an extra game.


SJK kept their title hopes alive with a thrilling 4-3 win over Gnistan, their third consecutive victory. Gnistan initially took the lead through Kasper Paananen, but Rachide Gnanou equalized and briefly put his team ahead before Paananen scored his second goal. Alenis Vargas and Valentin Gasc sealed the win for SJK, despite Gnistan's late efforts. SJK trails KuPS by six points but has a game in hand.


Gnistan's 4-3 loss to SJK confirmed their sixth-place finish for the season. Saku Heiskanen scored a late consolation goal, but it was too little, too late for Gnistan. The win keeps SJK in contention, just two points shy of European qualification.
