Jordi Alba, the Spanish left-back and former Barcelona defender, has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The 36-year-old Inter Miami player revealed his decision on social media, stating that he will conclude his illustrious career after the MLS playoffs.

Alba's football journey began at La Masia, Barcelona's famed youth academy, where he was initially released for being deemed too small. However, he proved his worth when Barcelona re-signed him from Valencia in 2012 for €14 million. During his 11-year tenure at Barcelona, Alba won numerous titles, including six La Liga championships, five Copa del Rey trophies, and the UEFA Champions League in 2015.

Alba expressed his gratitude to the clubs he's played for, including Barcelona, Valencia, and Inter Miami, as well as the Spanish national team. He emphasized that football has been an essential part of his life and that he's excited to start a new chapter. Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas praised Alba, saying he'll forever be part of the Inter Miami family.

Alba's decision comes after he had initially planned to extend his contract with Inter Miami through the 2027 season. However, he has now chosen to call time on his illustrious career, which includes six La Liga titles with Barcelona and a Champions League crown.

“I do so with complete conviction, peace and happiness. Because I feel I've walked this path with every ounce of passion I had and now it's the right time to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling,” Alba added, reflecting on his time in football.
