Florian Wirtz's future secure, says Julian Nagelsmann

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann comes to the defense of Florian Wirtz, attributing his slow start at Liverpool to adjustment issues in the Premier League.

“It's not his fault if his teammates don't convert them, and the statistics don't even tell the whole story.”

Julian Nagelsmann, Germany's coach, has defended Florian Wirtz's slow start at Liverpool, attributing it to the midfielder's adjustment to the Premier League. Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June for a record-breaking £100 million plus £16 million in potential bonuses, has yet to score or assist in seven Premier League matches.

Despite Wirtz's struggles, Nagelsmann highlighted his exceptional creativity, stating that he's the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League. According to Nagelsmann, Wirtz's statistics don't reflect his true impact on the game, and it's not his fault that his teammates aren't converting the chances. Nagelsmann emphasized that Wirtz needs to get used to the league, but he's playing with total freedom and knows what he's capable of.

Florian Wirtz hasn't scored or assisted in seven Premier League matches for Liverpool, but according to Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, Wirtz is still creating significant scoring opportunities. Nagelsmann praised Wirtz's abilities, stating, “Even though he hasn't scored any goals, he is still the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League,” following Germany's 4-0 win over Luxembourg in a World Cup qualifier.

Wirtz made a name for himself in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, notching 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances after joining from Cologne in 2020. However, his Anfield debut has been marred by Liverpool's struggles, with the Reds losing three consecutive matches. Wirtz's teammates, including Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah, have also faced challenges in finding form, contributing to the team's inconsistent performances.

Liverpool's new signings, including Wirtz and Isak, have struggled to replicate their previous form, while Salah's goal tally has dipped significantly, with only five goals in his last 21 appearances for the Reds. The team's struggles have raised concerns about their title ambitions, and Wirtz's integration into the team hasn't been as smooth as expected.

“Wirtz needs to get used to the league. I saw him playing with total freedom. He knows what he's capable of and how things work,” Nagelsmann said.

“He hasn't always had it easy - he'll have to work hard now too.”
