Connor McDavid heaped praise on his new teammate David Tomasek following his impressive NHL debut at 29 years old. McDavid noted that Tomasek's talent was evident, saying, “You can see he's played a lot of hockey. He's a great shooter, he's hit every shot in training. Not everyone has that kind of talent.”


Tomasek's debut was nothing short of remarkable, considering his age and the level of competition in the NHL. Despite being a late bloomer to the league, he seamlessly integrated into the Oilers' lineup, showcasing his skills on the ice. McDavid, who will soon reach 800 starts, watched in awe as Tomasek made an instant impact with a crucial pass that set up Leon Draisaitl's goal.

Given his impressive performance so far, including earning his first NHL point by setting up Leon Draisaitl's 400th goal, Tomasek might just make a lasting impression on the team.

Adam Henrique, Tomasek's third-line center, marveled at Tomasek's late start to his NHL career, saying, “It's unbelievable that he played his first NHL game at the age of twenty-nine.” Henrique, who will soon celebrate his 1,000th game, knows a thing or two about dedication and perseverance.


David Tomasek's linemate, 21-year-old rookie Isaac Howard, was a stark contrast in terms of experience. While Howard was fresh out of college, Tomasek had already achieved significant success in other leagues. Despite being new to the NHL, Tomasek reflected on his journey, saying, “I wish I was in the NHL at this age, too, but I just wasn't good enough. I'll be proud of this moment when I look back on my career.”




Under NHL rules, Tomasek doesn't qualify as a rookie since the league doesn't consider players over 26 as rookies. Nevertheless, Tomasek's debut was a notable achievement, and he's making the most of his opportunity.


David Tomasek's path to the NHL was a long and winding road. Before joining the league, he honed his skills in the Czech, Swedish, and Finnish leagues. His hockey journey began to take shape when he moved to Michigan at just 15 years old to pursue his dreams.


Tomasek's family has a history of pursuing opportunities abroad. As he recalled, “My mom did something similar when she was younger. When I left, she wasn't happy...” Despite the initial concerns, Tomasek's hard work paid off, and he went on to play against top talent, including current NHL players like Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski.




After his time in Michigan, Tomasek spent two seasons playing in the OHL with Belleville, further developing his skills and preparing himself for the next level.


David Tomasek's path to the NHL was a long and winding road. After 10 years, he took a detour back overseas before finally achieving his dream. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “It took a lot of work, a lot of faith and a little bit of luck.”




Tomasek's childhood fascination with the Edmonton Oilers and its legendary players, such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Jari Kurri, fueled his aspirations. “As a kid, I devoured books and magazines about Edmonton stars like Gretzky, Messier, Kurri...” he recalled with a smile. Growing up in the Czech Republic, he was often asked about these icons, and now he's playing alongside the world's best.




With a newfound sense of determination, Tomasek took to the ice with a simple yet effective mindset: play freely, don't complicate things, and let his skills shine. “Who's to say they're going up against the best players in the world?” he seemed to say. And succeed he did, exceeding expectations and making a strong impression in his NHL debut.
