Jamie Carragher criticizes Liverpool's recent form

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher expresses disappointment with the team's recent performances, calling them a 'mess' after the 1-0 Champions League defeat at Galatasaray.

“I think it's fair to say he hasn't been great for Liverpool so far, but also I don't think Liverpool have been great for him so far...”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has slammed the team's recent performances, branding them a “mess” after their 1-0 Champions League defeat at Galatasaray. This comes just days after their Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace. Carragher expressed his disappointment on CBS Sports, stating, “I'm not watching a top team. Liverpool aren't playing football at the moment, they are playing basketball. It is just end-to-end and I don't think top teams play like that.”

Major Concerns:

Defensive Vulnerability: Carragher highlighted that Liverpool have conceded seven goals in their first six Premier League games, a stark contrast to last season's defensive solidity.

Lack of Balance: He believes the team's balance is off, particularly with new signing Florian Wirtz, who he thinks needs to be dropped from the team.

Performance Issues: Carragher emphasized that it's not just about the losses, but the performances themselves, stating that Liverpool have been “battered” by teams, including Newcastle, who had 10 men on the pitch.

I'm not watching a top team,” Carragher told CBS Sports after the loss at the Ali Semi Yem. “Liverpool are not playing football, they are playing basketball. And I told Slot this on the first game of the season against Bournemouth.

“They obviously have a fantastic manager. Liverpool last season were a top team, but also a workman-like team, which they've sprinkled a bit of stardust on in terms of the transfers they have brought in. And they haven't gained anything going forward, but they've lost a lot defensively.

“I think for the manager now, he know needs to really earn his money. He did last season, by winning the Premier League, but there are few problems he has got to fix.”

“It will be really interesting how he does about it, because he spent a lot of money on certain players. Right now, the balance of the team is not right, and the obvious one that stands out is Florian Wirtz, who is just not at the races at all.

“He's a young boy, coming to a new league, and has plenty of time to go, but right now, he needs to come out of the team, Liverpool go back to what they were last season and try to build some confidence and some stability.

“Right now, it looks like a mess.”

Why Wirtz is struggling

On £125 million signing Florian Wirtz, Carragher added: "I think we should be analysing someone who cost that money. He has come in as a renowned star, Bundesliga player of the year two seasons running, won the Bundesliga, seasoned international with Germany.

“I think it's fair to say he hasn't been great for Liverpool so far, but also I don't think Liverpool have been great for him so far. They have to come together and try to make things work as best as they possibly can.

“Liverpool have got to do more for him also, as he's not getting the ball anywhere near as often as before. He has found it tough. Newcastle away was always going to be a baptism of fire in that left-half position, but you're coming up against that midfield, I can understand that. Against Burnley is where I thought we might see him at his best, he did okay.

“This is happening quite a bit where he's trying to get his shots off and people are just on top of him a little bit quicker. We know the standards of the Premier League are better than the Bundesliga... In this situation, it's faster, people are on top of him more, it's more physical.

“He's a young boy, trying to meet the demands of the league, there's no doubt about that.”

Florian Wirtz's Struggle at Liverpool

Understanding the Challenges:

Florian Wirtz's £125 million signing has raised eyebrows, with many expecting him to make an instant impact at Liverpool. However, his performances have been inconsistent, sparking debate about his struggles.

Adapting to the Premier League: Wirtz may be finding it tough to adjust to the physical demands of the Premier League. Ian Wright believes that players coming from the Bundesliga are often surprised by the pace and level required in the Premier League.

Physicality and Strength: Wirtz's slight build might be a disadvantage in the Premier League, where physicality and strength are crucial. Wright suggests that Wirtz needs to work on his fitness and strength levels to deal with the fatigue the Premier League can put on players.

Tactical Differences: The Premier League's emphasis on defending might be affecting Wirtz's playing style, which is more focused on attacking. This change in approach could be causing him to struggle.

Pressure and Expectations: As a £125 million signing, Wirtz faces immense pressure to perform. This pressure might be affecting his confidence and ability to settle into the team.

Current Form: Wirtz has shown flashes of brilliance but hasn't scored any goals or registered an assist in the Premier League this season. His shooting accuracy is 28.57%, and he takes 1.86 shots per 90 minutes on the pitch.

Despite these challenges, Wirtz has shown promise, and with time, he might adapt to the Premier League and deliver on expectations.
