Gavi's injury update: Barcelona star to undergo surgery for meniscus issue. Gavi to miss several weeks. Read more.
“Gavi underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment...”
Barcelona's star midfielder Gavi is heading to surgery to fix a lingering meniscus injury in his right knee. The 21-year-old Spain international has been struggling with this issue since August, after featuring in the opening two matches of the season. Gavi's road to recovery won't be easy, considering he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the same knee last November, which kept him out for a whole year.
Injury Update:
- Gavi's Status: Undergoing arthroscopic surgery to address the meniscus injury
- Expected Recovery Time: Spanish media reports suggest 5-6 weeks out, but no official timeline has been provided by Barcelona
- Additional Injuries: Barcelona's injury list grows with Fermin Lopez set out for three weeks with a leg muscle injury, joining Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen on the sidelines.
This latest setback adds pressure on Barcelona's squad, especially with crucial matches approaching, including their Champions League clash with PSG. The team currently sits two points behind LaLiga leaders Real Madrid.
“Gavi underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment for the radial injury to the internal meniscus in his right knee,” Barca said in a statement on Monday.
“The conclusion is that in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination.”

Barcelona's troubles deepened on Monday as midfielder Fermin Lopez was ruled out for three weeks with a leg muscle injury sustained during their 3-0 win over Getafe on Sunday. The 22-year-old Spain international picked up the injury late in the game after coming on as a second-half substitute. Lopez, who had scored twice in Barcelona's 6-0 thrashing of Valencia earlier this month, is expected to miss several crucial matches, including the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on October 1.
Injury Details:
- Type of Injury: Iliopsoas muscle injury in his left leg
- Expected Recovery Time: Approximately three weeks
- Matches Missed: Real Oviedo, Real Sociedad, PSG, and potentially Sevilla
Despite the injury blow, Barcelona will look to stay on track when they visit Real Oviedo on Thursday.
