The fifth round of the 2025/26 Eredivisie season has concluded, with eight teams competing for crucial points. 


Sparta Triumphs in Rotterdam Derby

Sparta Rotterdam secured a 1-0 win over Excelsior Rotterdam in the third Rotterdam derby of the Eredivisie season. Excelsior had started the match brightly, with Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Szymon Wlodarczyk creating scoring opportunities within the first 30 minutes. However, they were unable to find the breakthrough. The game took a crucial turn when Excelsior's full-back Arthur Zagre was sent off with a second yellow card, shifting the momentum in Sparta's favor. This red card proved decisive, allowing Sparta to capitalize on the numerical advantage and secure their third win in four games.


Sparta's chances seemed slim until Ayoub Oufkir, a Feyenoord loanee, made the difference with a clever run at the back post in the 93rd minute, scoring the winning goal. Earlier, Mitchell van Bergen had a promising opportunity that didn't materialize. With this win, Sparta solidified their position in the top half of the Eredivisie table and aim to extend their winning streak to four out of five games when they host FC Twente next week. Meanwhile, Excelsior will look to bounce back when they visit fellow promoted side FC Volendam the following Saturday.


Utrecht's Shock Defeat

High-flying FC Utrecht suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat at the hands of FC Groningen at Stadion Galgenwaard. In the first half, Utrecht goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas made crucial saves, denying Groningen's Jorg Schreuders three times and keeping the score level going into the break. However, the momentum shifted after halftime when German defender Marco Rente scored a decisive header for Groningen, securing a well-deserved win for the visitors.

However, the Ivorian striker's goal was disallowed for offside, leaving Utrecht pointless for the second time this season. Utrecht's next challenge is an away game at Fortuna Sittard before their UEFA Europa League campaign begins. Meanwhile, Groningen's three wins in four games have propelled them to seventh place, and they'll look to continue their form against Telstar at home in their next match.



Heracles' Losing Streak Continues

Heracles Almelo's struggles continued as they lost 2-1 to AZ at home, extending their winless run to five games. AZ took the lead just nine minutes into the match when Portuguese defender Alexandre Penetra capitalized on a rebound from Sven Mijnans' shot. Heracles leveled the score before halftime when captain Damon Mirani headed the ball into the net in the 29th minute. However, AZ's superior form ultimately paid off as they secured the win.


AZ extended their winning streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over Heracles. Despite Heracles' equalizer, AZ dominated the second half and created the most significant chances. Mexx Meerdink sealed the win by scoring from Kees Smit's low cross. Heracles remain winless, setting the stage for a crucial match against NAC Breda in round 6. Meanwhile, AZ will face a tougher test when Feyenoord visits Alkmaar on Sunday.



Fortuna Sittard Secures Win

Telstar's impressive 2-0 win over PSV didn't translate to their home match against Fortuna Sittard, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat. Fortuna took an early lead when Paul Gladon headed the ball into the net in the second minute, leaving Telstar to mount a comeback. Before halftime, Jochem Ritmeester van de Kamp equalized for Telstar with a well-worked goal from a swift combination on the left flank. However, Fortuna Sittard ultimately dominated the match, securing three points.


In the second half, Telstar had several chances to take the lead, with Kay Tejan missing three promising opportunities. These missed chances proved costly, allowing Fortuna Sittard to capitalize on their own scoring chances and secure the win. Fortuna Sittard's victory showcased their resilience and ability to adapt to different opponents.




Substitute Makan Aiko proved decisive for Fortuna Sittard, scoring twice in the second half to seal the win. Dimitrios Limnios set up Aiko's first goal with a precise low cross, and Aiko added a second with a counter-attacking goal in the 90th minute, beating goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. both times. With this victory, Fortuna Sittard secured their second consecutive win and will now host FC Utrecht in their next match. Meanwhile, Telstar will travel north to face FC Groningen.
