Canadian cyclist Magdeleine Vallieres stunned the world by claiming gold in the women's road race at the UCI Road World Championships. Her bold attack on the final climb of the 164km hilly circuit in Kigali, Rwanda, left competitors in awe. Vallieres was part of a lead group that included New Zealand's Niamh Fisher-Black and Spain's Mavi Garcia, but she powered ahead, showcasing her strength and determination.

As the race entered its final stages, Vallieres made her move, bursting clear from the lead group on the steep cobbled climb with 2.5km to go. Her decisive attack left Fisher-Black and Garcia struggling to keep pace. Vallieres crossed the finish line 23 seconds ahead of Fisher-Black, with Garcia finishing 27 seconds behind her rival. This victory marked Canada's first road championship title since Barbara Heeb's win in 1996.

Vallieres' win was a surprise to many, as she wasn't considered a top contender for the gold medal. However, her strategic attack and impressive performance earned her the top spot on the podium. The 24-year-old Canadian rider dedicated her win to her team's belief in her abilities, stating, “The girls believed in me, so I believed in myself.”

The 24-year-old athlete powered up the ascent towards the finish line, staying clear of Fisher-Black who secured second place, while Garcia claimed third. This impressive performance set the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the championships.

The championships, a historic first in Africa, will wrap up on Sunday with the highly anticipated elite men's road race. Fans are eagerly awaiting the final event, which promises to deliver more thrilling moments and outstanding performances from top athletes.
